Kate Garrett is accompanied tonight, as she was at Truck, by the cellist Barney Morse-Brown. Former Mystics vocalist Kate now appears to have veered towards folk rather than pop, and somehow managed to make some of it sound almost jazzy. The songs are far from straightforward, tumbling along prettily enough without bothering with hook-laden choruses or anything so obvious. Occasionally this means they flow past without you noticing them, more often than not it makes them even more charming. Most importantly for Kate in terms of future success though: she really can sing very very very well. Very well. Indeed. Really very very well. In the end that should be enough to take her wherever she wants to go.
